These books are so... I don't know, Central European in worldview. There's a lot of the Slavic mentality in there, and I don't mean the Russian "we're the best" kind, I mean the mentality of smaller Slavic nations that always get screwed over by their bigger and stronger neighbors. A lot of sarcasm and pessimism, expecting things to go south all the time. But also sudden bursts of heroism and defiance, help and love to people you don't even know, partly because you're still a good person inside and partly as a fuck you to those who think they'd already broken you.
